Galle is a colonial Fort in South Sri Lanka that was variously occupied by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British over several centuries. When you enter this walled city, it’s like you’ve wandered into a European neighbourhood circa 1900. It’s stately, sedate and very chic. The streets have French names and the homes are called villas and you’ll almost start believing you’re in Europe till a flash of colour streaks past you, scattering pedestrians and narrowly avoiding a telephone pole. Galle’s autos serve the useful purpose of reminding folks that they’re still in Sri Lanka, hooting happily and darting up cobblestone lanes in a flash of violent colours. No pastels, thank you very much; the street mavericks of Galle prefer a more, shall we say, full-bodied colour palette and you’ll be treated to a full range of shades that you’ve probably never set sight on before and you most certainly cannot name.

And of course, beige- because… why the heck not?

And just when you thought you’d seen it all…. turquoise.
Just to mix things up, they’ll throw in a good old red.
Another red.
And then the other standard colours… Yellow.
Green.
Blue.
Green again.
Green and Yellow.
Almost Maroon… but could pass off as Red.
