Zakopane is at the foot of the Tatras mountains in southern Poland. It’s the Gateway to the Tatras, and a scenic pit stop for skiers and hikers. The pretty-as-a-picture sleepy little town has traditional wooden houses, bustling markets and lively restaurants.


I stayed at the spiffy Hotel Aries, at the edge of town.




Oscypek, a smoked cheese, is a local specialty.


It’s made of salted sheep milk, and the cheese-maker is called ‘baca’.


Nothing like some lively Highlander music to unwind after a day on the slopes.


Shake a leg. Then get down to a hearty meal and *polish* it off with some mouth-watering dessert.


Or candied fruit, perhaps?
